The West Front

This stone carving was made during the last restoration of the west front of Bath Abbey and can be seen top corner / north. It was carved after a period of research when I made copies of details from the original surviving work carried out in 1490 by the Virtue brothers, famous for their carvings at Westminster Abbey. I have attempted to follow their style as faithfully as I can and as a result this new figure of St Philip holding the five loaves looks like it belongs to the original concept.

temptation of eve

Location: Bath

Made in: 1984

This was my first public carving carried out for the Bath Festival. John Jukest organiser and promoter Brian Balls created a competition for six sculptors from Britain and abroad to carve identical blocks of Bath Stone set up in Victoria Park. This created huge interest with many people returning day after day to check progress pass judgement and give advice and encouragement. It was a well-organised and very successful event that was funded by the sale of the work afterwards. Because the story of Eve being tempted by the snake was familiar to all I had many lively contributions both theological and anatomical and made many friends over the weeks.

king neptune

Material: Indiana Limestone

Size in meters: 1.600 x 1.600 x 3.000

Location: Bermuda Maritime Museum

Made in: 1989

This giant statue standing three metres high is a copy of the ships figurehead that once grandly adorned the prow of H.M.S. Irresistible. It was carved by me with the assistance of a team of apprentices and carvers at the workshops of Nimbus Conservation Ltd. It is the mascot of the maritime museum in Bermuda and stands in the parade ground of the commissioner's house in the grounds of the museum. The stone was purchased in London from a firm that keeps a supply regularly shipped from the USA. After carving in Bristol the finished carving was shipped back to Bermuda.

This is one of my Bible illustrations from the story of Jonah. When I showed it at Truro Cathedral an eight year old boy asked me "Why is the man being eaten by the fish" In answer I was able to tell the story of Jonah, the first time he had ever heard it. It was a great moment for me to see my sculpture at work. For an older ordinance there is the speech bubble that opens up the question of conscience verses prevarication.

casting the first stone

Material: Yew wood

Location: For sale

Size in meters: .400 x .400 x 2.000

Made in: 1991

This work is illustrates another Bible story. The woman taken in adultery. The idea here is to confront the onlooker with the vulnerability of someone found out and compromised, and invite them in Jesus' words to cast the first stone if they are without sin. At the time I made this, my workshop was in a part of Bristol frequented by prostitutes and drug dealers, and it was the daily scenes on the streets that prompted this sculpture.

Location: City of London. Guild hall Art Gallery

This is the famous character from our medieval plague story, and is credited with having an amazing rat catching cat who made his fortune for him. Today we retell the story in pantomime every Christmas holiday at theatres all over the country. He is based on a real man who lived in London at the end of the fourteenth century and was lord mayor three times. The real Dick Whittington contributed to the building of alms houses and other charitable establishments as well as having the porch built on the Guildhall (later replaced) which was adjacent to the new building on which my statue has been placed.

queen of sheba

 Title: Queen of Sheba

Material: Painted hardwoods

Size in meters: .370 x .170 x .560

Location: For sale

Made in: 1999

This painted wood carving shows the Queen of Sheba as I imagine her. The real Queen of Sheba came from the Yemen at a time when stories were told rather than written down. The amazing thing about the Bible is that it takes this ancient oral story telling and through it speaks to every generation in history and will go on do so into the future. For us to day there is a message for women in this story. A powerful, intelligent and complete woman seeks out a powerful and intelligent God-wise man and the sum of the whole is greater than the two parts.

Another sculpture carved in public outside the church. Many hands where involved with this carving including children from the adjacent primary school. Local people watched as they collected their children from school and made their way to the shops. The work was also seen from the busy road in front of the church. The finished carving was well received by the community especially the very young children one of whom insists on giving the fish a kiss every time she passes.
